METANOIA is a semi-autobiographical graphic novel set against the high-pressure educational environment in Beijing, China between 2010 and 2016. Through the perspectives of multiple teenage girls, it portrays lived experiences and perceptions of adolescence during junior high and high school. Rooted in personal growth, the work focuses on relationships within groups of girls where the boundaries between friendship and romantic affection become blurred. It explores the emotional struggles, identity confusion, and gradual formation of self-awareness experienced by individuals under the combined pressures of complex peer dynamics, expectations from teachers and parents, and uncertainty about the future.
In terms of process, I primarily work with ink, Pentel watercolour brushes, and calligraphy pens. Using a lightbox, I conduct layered drawing and iterative experimentation. By controlling line weight and embracing the unpredictability of watercolor diffusion, I construct a delicate yet expressive visual language. These materials and techniques not only strengthen emotional expression, but also allow subtle psychological states that are difficult to articulate in words to be perceived visually. In addition, I employ spatial composition and the use of negative space to suggest unspoken emotional relationships and psychological distance between characters, forming a more understated narrative approach.
Due to time constraints, only the opening chapters and selected key pages have been completed at this stage. The works in this exhibition are presented in two formats: fragmented emotional excerpts in individual booklets, emphasizing the discontinuity of memory and subjective perception; and a partially completed graphic novel with a linear narrative structure. Moving forward, I plan to further develop this project into a more comprehensive publication and expand it into a series that explores multiple characters’ perspectives, enriching the narrative depth of this coming-of-age experience from different viewpoints.
